The purpose of the position:
The Youth and Children’s Director oversees the youth and children’s ministries of the church. The Youth and Children’s Director position responsibilities directly support the church’s mission of helping all people to grow their spirits with us.  The Youth and Children’s Director will lead a variety of programs and ministries that foster discipleship in Jesus Christ, fellowship, and service while meeting the needs of youth and children within the church. The Youth and Children’s Director will evaluate current programming and develop new ministries as needed to meet different needs and ensure the church has meaningful discipleship, fellowship, and service opportunities for youth and children. 

The essential functions of this position:

Youth Ministry
  1. Discipleship: Organize courses, programs, and activities designed to foster and deepen youth as disciples of Jesus Christ. This may include:
    1. Teaching: Sunday School Classes, special Bible studies, Confirmation, and other teaching needs;
    2. Sunday school: Establish and run Sunday school program for youth, including purchasing of curriculum, planning educational programs, promoting awareness of Sunday School Classes, recruiting teachers, organizing training opportunities
    3. Youth Group/Fellowship: Provide weekly opportunities for youth to gather for fellowship, discipleship, and service
    4. Worship: Help youth plan, coordinate, and lead annual and/or monthly Youth Sunday worship service(s)
       
  2. Service: Organize, plan, and offer various service and mission opportunities for the youth group on a consistent basis. This may include:
    1. Mission Trips: Plan, organize, and lead annual mission trip opportunities for both middle and senior high youth
    2. Other Opportunities: Plan, organize, and lead regular (weekly, monthly, etc.) service opportunities for both middle and senior high youth such as the monthly Senior Citizens meal
       
  3. Fellowship: Organize and provide opportunities for youth to fellowship with one another and grow as a group as they mature socially. This may include:
    1. Participation in various Mountain Sky Conference and Western Jurisdiction of the UMC events, retreats, and gatherings
    2. Various fun activities such as movie nights, lock-ins, etc.

Children’s Ministry

1) Discipleship: Organize courses, programs, and activities designed to foster and deepen children as disciples of Jesus Christ. This may include:
  1. Teaching: Sunday School Classes, special Bible studies, Vacation Bible School, and other teaching needs;
  2. Sunday school: Establish and run Sunday school program for children, including the purchasing of curriculum, planning educational programs, promoting awareness of Sunday School Classes, recruiting teachers, organizing training opportunities
  3. Worship: Help plan, coordinate, and lead ongoing presence of Children in worship
    1. Children’s Choir: Help coordinate with Children’s Choir Director and Children’s Bell Choir Director rehearsals, cantatas for worship, and other opportunities to develop and grow Children’s presence in worship
    2. Children’s Moments: In coordination with pastors and worship team, plan weekly Children’s Moments in worship. Can be taught by Director or by other trained individuals as chosen by Director
       
2) Service: Organize, plan, offer various service and mission opportunities for children on a consistent basis. This may include:
  1. Opportunities: Plan, organize, and lead regular (weekly, monthly, etc.) service opportunities for children
     
3) Fellowship and Community Outreach: Organize and provide opportunities for children to fellowship with one another and grow as a group as they mature socially. This may include:
  1. Community Events: Help plan regular fellowship opportunities for children and families such as Fall Harvest Festival, Pumpkin Patch, Hamburger Day, Easter Egg Hunt, and other such events
  2. Children’s Center Liaison: Serve as one of the main contacts between the Park Hill Children’s Center and the Church. This includes being well connected to the Center and serving as a Board Member on the Children’s Center Board. Various fun activities such as movie nights, lock-ins, etc.

Administrative Responsibilities
  1. Safe Environments: Responsible for training and screening all volunteers who work with children and youth and assuring that the Child Protection Policy is implemented and followed at all times
  2. Nursery: Responsible for the operation of the Church Nursery and related staffing for Sunday morning worship and other activities and events as needed
  3. Communication: Responsible for regular communication and advertising both within the church and to the larger community of various ministries and events related to children and youth ministries
  4. Fundraising: As needed, be prepared to fundraise for various activities and expenses related to the position
  5. Finances: Must be able to supervise and document funds collected for special events and provide timely documentation of expenses incurred. 
  6. Input: Establish a team/committee of parents, youth, and church members to serve in an advisory aspect for the ministries and with visioning, serving, and helping within the ministries

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  1. Nursery Director and various volunteers

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  1. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in children’s or youth education
  2. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret educational materials
  3. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to relate to many different ages and types of children, youth, and adults
  4. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from parents, staff, or congregation

Other desirable characteristics, traits and abilities:
  1. Must be a Christian and fully support the ministries of Park Hill UMC
  2. Must be able to work efficiently and effectively in team situations and be able to work independently
  3. Must have excellent time management skills
  4. Needs to be creative, have a passion for children and youth, have high energy, and be able to motivate others
