The Volunteers of America, along with CSU College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Bark Buster, Bark & Play, The Molecule Effect, and others, will host its third annual Armed Forces Day of Service event on Saturday May 19, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This event, which aims to bring awareness to and donations for Volunteers of America’s Veteran Assistance Fund, will provide veterans with the opportunity to receive exams, vaccinations and microchips for their dogs as well as heart health and dental screenings for themselves.

The event will take place at Volunteers of America’s Bill Daniels Veteran Services Center, 1247 Santa Fe Drive, Denver, CO 80204.

Dogs play an important role in helping veterans cope with reintegration, but, unfortunately, it is often difficult for veterans facing hardships to find veterinary care resources. Many must choose between resources for themselves or their pets, potentially compromising their own welfare.

Veterans must provide proof of service for validation prior to receiving services. In order to provide a safe and welcoming environment, we ask that all dogs be non-aggressive and leashed on a non-retractable leash.

The Volunteers of America Veteran Assistance Fund is a non-stipulated fund that can be used for anything that a veteran in the Volunteers of America program needs such as transportation and housing costs, medical costs and other miscellaneous expenses. In 2017, a total of $28,043.92 was spent through the Veteran Assistance Fund helping 57 veterans in need. To donate to the Veteran Assistance Fund, visit voacolorado.org/supportvets
