First UMC Golden partners with community to share This is [NOT] Who We Are
October 11, 2023
Golden formed an anti-racism collective three years ago to help the community better understand and respond to systemic racism. Golden United formed after the 2016 elections to help people stay connected in a divided world. Golden First United Methodist is working to partner with many different groups to transform the Golden community into one where all people are welcomed, have access to housing and support and can stay connected. These three groups partnered with the City of Golden to show This is [NOT] Who We Are. This showing was sponsored by the Mountain Sky Conference. About forty people attended the event which included a showing of the film, sharing by the Golden chief of Police on their values of one team, compassion, integrity, equity and couarge, and their mission to keep the community safe through strong partnerships and excellence in service.
After Chief Harvey's talk, the groups split into smaller groups to share their experince of the film and discuss what we can do in Golden to be more anti-racist. One take away from a particpant was that as the privlidged leaders (white) we oftern don't include people who might have different ways of responding (people of color) in our leadership because it takes more work to get things done; meetings must be navigated more carefully.
These groups are grateful to the Mountain Sky conference for sharing this film and making the conversation possible.
