Story by Rev. Bich Thy (Betty) Nguyen
Multicultural and Advocacy Ministries Developer
Mountain Sky Conference of the United Methodist Church
As the Mountain Sky Conference, we are committed to doing anti-racism work within ourselves, our churches, and our world. In response to conversations begun at Clergy Orders 2019
, the following book study will be offered as a space for clergy to learn, explore, and reflect on the process of white socialization and realities of racism within our society.
This 6-week book study will include a short reading and a question for reflection each day. It will frame anti-racism work as a spiritual practice in order to emphasize that anti-racism work is never finished, but rather is a life long commitment to living more fully into the body of Christ and the image of God.
This group will be limited to 8-10 clergy, so please sign up as soon as possible. Future book studies on this topic may also be offered in the fall. Revs. AJ Bush and Bich Thy (Betty) Nguyen will be facilitating this book study.
More about Waking Up White
“Waking Up White,"
is a wake-up call for white people who want to consciously contribute to racial justice rather than unconsciously perpetuate patterns of racism. With honesty and humility, Debby Irving shares her own story of transformation—a journey of opening herself to learning about the realities of racism and the unintended impacts of white privilege. By confronting her own fears and mistakes, she gleans many useful lessons and tips that can help move others from confusion and avoidance to constructive engagement, authentic connection, and courageous action.” – Terry Keleher, Thought Leadership and Practice Specialist, Race Forward
