Vickie Wilkinson of Bozeman United Methodist Church in Bozeman, Montana, plans to serve her ninth year with Siloe Church and School in San Salvador, El Salvador on a mission trip this July.
The teams Wilkinson serves with work in an impoverished colonia in a suburb of San Salvador. The team works closely with Siloe Church, an entity that works to transform the lives of gang members, provide an education for the colonia children, and works with the elderly of the community.
In cooperation with Christ for the City Intl., Siloe Church also ministers to an impoverished island community, and a boys' juvenile detention center.
Wilkinson expressed her enthusiasm for the July 2019 trip: "We have seen so many awesome things occur there...and there is so much yet to do!"
The trip will take place from July 6 to July 13 and participants will stay at the Hotel Mirador in San Salvador. The trip will cost $880 per person for a single room, plus airfare or $630 per person for a double room, plus airfare. This will cover lodging, meals, transportation and translators. Airfare from Bozeman, connecting thru Houston to San Salvador is currently between $1,000 and $1,100.
Participants are expected to reserve their own air travel, but Wilkinson and trip leadership are ready to help make these reservations. No special vaccinations are necessary for travel to El Salvador. Additionally United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM) requires insurance that is approximately $30.
The following projects will need volunteers for this trip:
- Work in classrooms (pre-K through 9th grade)
- Work with the vulnerable elderly population
- Host a reading event with the library
- Remodel an office
Wilkinson shared the criteria for project volunteers being "hearts to love across borders."
