First United Methodist Church, Gilette, Wyoming
On Aug. 22, the sanctuary at First United Methodist Church in Gillette, Wyoming, was transformed into a large clothing store -- complete with men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing, shoes, toys, jackets, and more. First UMC has been collecting clothing, jackets, shoes, etc., as part of their weekly clothing swap for the past six months. That Saturday, the entire community was invited to come to the swap and receive items at no cost. Donations of clothing, jackets, and shoes were accepted during this time.
This year’s swap was the biggest yet for First UMC Gillette. More than 125 families and 250 children were served. Many families came to get back-to-school clothing as well as winter jackets and boots. First UMC views this swap as one of its primary mission outreaches in the community.
“We get people here that we would never see in our church otherwise,” Pastor AJ Bush said. “It’s an opportunity for us to get to know the people in our community and provide them with a much-needed service."
In addition to the annual swaps, First UMC Gillette houses a weekly clothing swap that occurs every Tuesday night from 5 to 7 p.m.
