First UMC in Fort Lupton makes a big community impact with Thanksgiving box giveaway

For over a decade, this little church north of Denver has engaged in a significant ministry to our less fortunate neighbors and our larger community. In cooperation with the Epworth Foundation and Epworth United Methodist Church, hundreds of complete Thanksgiving meals (turkey, pies and all the fixings) are given to needy families throughout Fort Lupton and the surrounding area. Last year, almost 350 complete Thanksgiving meals were distributed by First UMC volunteers through this special ministry!
Many area businesses, individuals, local government, and nonprofits contribute generously to make this annual gift a reality. Reinhardt Oil of Fort Lupton very graciously contributes the truck and the driver who picks up our pallets of completed boxes and delivers them to our local food bank. Each year the community, church organizers, and volunteers gather on the Saturday before Thanksgiving to make the community “Turkey Box Giveaway” happen. The line forms early as volunteers stand on the street corners with signs directing hungry families to where they will get their turkey boxes; a gift for a Thanksgiving meal on Thanksgiving Day. The turkey box is compliments of the Epworth and Fort Lupton United Methodist churches and the Fort Lupton community.
A lot of effort goes into preparing for this important day, but by noon all of the boxes are on their way to provide those families a reminder of God's providence and our love! This is a wonderful community outreach and a noteworthy way of celebrating God's gifts in this bountiful season. The Fort Lupton Community Turkey Box Giveaway is a remarkable, collaborative effort by this small community to genuinely provide for its neighbors and newcomers alike – anyone who is in need.
Who says a little church can only do little ministries?
We can do more when we work together, through others and Christ!
