Get ahead to avoid 2018 decreases in giving

Good news for your stewardship strategy is that research has proven time and time again, the main reason people give generously to their church is that they love their church, and believe in the missions and ministries that local congregations offer for their communities, and others throughout the world. Gifts of generosity are specific ways we exercise our faith to expand God’s kingdom. Tax incentives are not the reasons for our stewardship actions that share the love of God, and the messages of hope given by Jesus Christ.
  1. Continue sharing the good news with examples of how generous gifts given by United Methodists support life-changing and spiritual transformations.
  2. Don’t even think about telling your members that you anticipate lower giving because of tax laws. This will NOT motivate anyone to give. Research shows that except for the Silent Generation, talking about shortfalls will actually decrease giving. Instead, focus on abundance and highlight transformation made possible through giving.
  3. Inform your congregation about planned giving strategies that financially benefit them and your church ministries. Planned giving strategies will continue to benefit donors in 2018 and these types of giving techniques result in higher levels of gifts.
  4. Include in your 2018 stewardship strategies, an EXCELLENT source for annual cash gifts: IRA rollover gifts. This strategy can increase your church’s annual income while truly benefiting those givers who are at least 70 1/2 years old with traditional Individual Retirement Accounts.

Teach your congregation new ways to give, starting with IRA Charitable Rollover gifts.
Use your IRA for good. The IRA Charitable Rollover law will not change in 2018! Faithful givers over the age of 70 1/2 years old, who have a traditional Individual Retirement Account (IRA), can give to their church by using their Required Minimum Distribution (RMD). IRA Charitable Rollovers are good for the donor and good for the church! Download and view this flyer for more stewardship strategies.

Contact the Rocky Mountain United Methodist Foundation for guidelines and forms that assist churches with donor IRA distribution gifts.
