It was not only a special day for mothers in Parachute, Colorado on May 13. At Grand Valley United Methodist Church, women took over the service to celebrate United Methodist Women (UMW) Sunday. Though not the official UMW Sunday, the church decided to honor women of the church in conjunction with Mother's Day. Many women helped with ushering, reading, announcements, and leading the service. Penelope Olson, who is taking lay ministry courses, gave the message.
Each member of the congregation was given a carnation when they entered the sanctuary. A special time was devoted for mothers as each member of the congregation was asked to say the name of their own. Then, a candle was lit honoring and remembering these women. Following the service was fellowship with cake and coffee. This fun service celebrating mothers also showed the value women bring to the church through both service and leadership.
