Invitation to join Racial Justice Movement and Ministries from Mountain Sky Conference | UMC on Vimeo.
During the 2020 Annual Conference of our Mountain Sky Conference, Bishop Karen Oliveto issued a call to resist evil, injustice, and oppression in whatever forms they present themselves. In alignment with the Council of Bishops, we ask every United Methodist to name the egregious sin of racism and white supremacy.
Fourteen people answered the call, both clergy and laity, to form the Racial Justice Movement and Ministries Task Force. The group is in the "forming" stage, working on what we hope to achieve. Ideas include being a resource for education on anti-racism and racial justice; transforming the church; providing engagement with our communities; holding our conference accountable; advocating for and finding ways to create systemic change.
In the fall, over 700 people from our conference and beyond joined MSC’s Spiritual Pilgrimage to the Land of Love. Through this journey together we are engaging in deep listening to practice daily anti-racism work. Our hope is that this will provide a shared experience and build capacity for listening and conversation so that we can dive deeper into social justice work in the future.
We invite you to join the Racial Justice Movement and Ministries Task Force. We are currently meeting twice a month on the first and third Sundays in the evening. If you want to engage with our work of transformation by seeking to interrogate and dismantle white supremacy in all the forms it presents itself, please contact: Rev. Bich Thy (Betty) Nguyen at firstname.lastname@example.org
