Story and photos submitted by the Rev. Barbara Johns-Schleicher
Pastor, Lamar United Methodist Church, Lamar, Colorado

Every Wednesday this July and August, Lamar United Methodist Church's Whole Church Initiative action group sponsors "Blessings in a Bag", which is a canvas bag filled with free, non-perishable food for school-age students. It is refilled each week and also includes a sack lunch of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, snacks, fruit, and a drink.
This is to help lower-income children who often go hungry have food in the summertime. Sitting down to eat a PB&J sack lunch, we also want to meet and build relationships with our neighbors. For the rest of us, please help by donating individual size portions of non-perishable food items for the bags, or fresh items for the sack lunches (peanut butter, jelly, bread, fruit, snack, individual fruit drinks), or please send a check to purchase food items.
"Blessings in a Bag" are given out at 10:30 a.m. every Wednesday in July through the second week of August at the Hope Center, located on the north side of Lamar UMC. For more information, contact Lamar UMC at 719-336-9021 or
