MSC Leadership Development Awards "Culture of Courageous Leadership" Grants

June 02, 2021

Members of the MSC Leadership Development Team enthusiastically approved grants this week for use in building a culture of courageous leadership. Grants funds are still available for 2021 - see more information below. The grants will support the following ministries:

  • Columbia Falls UMC, Columbia Falls, MT -- Rev. Jared Stine will lead his congregation in purchasing picnic tables and books for use in a conversations with the congregation and their neighbors. The goal is to train leaders and to have a gathering space for cultural capacity building and a new openness to invite the community to church.
  • UMC of Johnstown, Johnstown, CO -- Rev. Jeremy Scott will work with his congregation to offer a Youth Leadership Bootcamp. This week-long camp will inspire young people to learn leadership skills, engage in awareness and advocacy around social justice, and present TED-style talks to share what they learned throughout the week.

The MSC Leadership Development Team is offering grants for up to $500 for congregational work in building a culture of courageous leadership in the areas of anti-racism or laity leadership. A congregational match is preferred, as well as, submitting outcomes and an artifact (photo, article) to share with the conference.

These focus areas are allowing the team to bring leadership resources to people and places participating in Courageous Leadership:

  • Examples of anti-racism ministry include curriculum/classes, participation with other organizations in empowerment/partnership, supporting clergy/laity in attending training events, etc.

  • Examples of laity leadership ministry include supporting the cost of COS for a licensed local pastor, promoting laity leadership through lay servant ministry, organizing events to welcome the community, etc.

Grants will be awarded on a rolling basis throughout 2021
