June 1, 2019 will mark the 10th anniversary of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) West Depot in Salt Lake City, Utah. UMCOR West was the second UMCOR Relief Supply warehouse established in the U.S. Alongside UMCOR Sager Brown Depot in Baldwin, Louisiana, UMCOR West’s relief supply ministry relies on volunteers to build, shelve, and distribute relief kits to those affected by natural disasters in the United States. Mission teams from churches across the nation work at UMCOR West on a weekly basis. As a connectional church, we know that together we can make a difference in the most vulnerable and displaced populations.
Over the past 10 years, UMCOR West has received mission groups and volunteers from every single state in the west and has even welcomed groups from as far away as Iowa, Texas and Maryland. This has been a powerful ten years of vital ministry, and we look forward to the next decade of service.
In the past - due to demand - groups wishing to volunteer at UMCOR West had to book a year in advance. Oddly, the spring and summer of 2019 have a number of weeks that are still open. Leadership is looking to fill those weeks with enthusiastic volunteers who are eager to serve those in need, acting as the hands and feet of Jesus in a broken world.
UMCOR West provides a clean and safe work space that can accommodate large or small groups. Moreover, UMCOR West allows groups to engage in an intergenerational mission experience as all ages are welcome. Finally, volunteering with UMCOR West is a powerful way to engage with the unique religious culture of Utah. UMCOR West volunteers work with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on a weekly basis in Salt Lake City.
