Think Critical Race Theory is controversial these days? Just wait until you bring up Critical Whiteness Theory! What exactly is “whiteness”? How does it impact all our identities, our relationships, our society…our church? And, how in the world do we have respectful, honest dialogue about it in ways that lead to justice-seeking practices?
Join the Rev. Betty Nguyen as she welcomes the Rev. Rebecca (Becky) M. David Hensley to Vital Conversations as they discuss what whiteness is and why and how we need to talk about it in church.
Rebecca (Becky) M. David Hensley is an ordained deacon in the North Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church. She is currently pursuing a PhD at Iliff School of Theology and the University of Denver’s Joint Doctoral Program in the Study of Religion and teaches courses on “Identity, Power, and Vocation in Community” as an adjunct instructor for Iliff. Her research interests involve the intersections of Critical Race/Critical Whiteness studies, liberative women’s theologies, and faith-based community organizing. She resides in Lakewood, CO where her spouse, Ben (also a United Methodist deacon), is lead pastor at Lakewood UMC.
